  • Seattle Japanese Garden

    August 18th, 2017

Wander through the Seattle Japanese Garden was a delightful experience and a wonderful way to spend a cool Seattle morning.

Paved walkway, lined with bushed and trees. There is a small chain draped between walking lights to designate the path.

Upon entrance, I was greeted with a peaceful path and the sound of water trickling from an unseen stream.  A few different types of flowers are scattered in the distance, with bright green ferns intermingling with the trees.

Growing up, there were four Azalea bushes lining the walkway to my home; every season there would be a burst of dark pink, white, and purple colored flowers. This was the first time I’d seen an Azalea with pink and white striped flowers; it was quite a lovely experience.

I was struck by the beauty of this tree, and the rough bark peeled to reveal the smooth, new growth of the trunk underneath. I was reminded that we are ever-changing and evolving; each person is made up of layers, each slightly different from the last. The shedding of old skin and experiences have forged us into the new and beautiful people we are growing into.

Rarely do I come across little streams, but the quiet lapping of the water and slow movement of the yellow flower created a beautiful moment for contemplation.

These Japanese Water Irises had such a vibrant purple color which was only further accentuated by the green of their stems.

This photo was taken as I stood, perched on a nicely placed stone bench. The peace in this picture is further punctuated by the water, with its slight ripples from the bugs dancing above the fish and the shifting shadows from the sun’s eminent setting.  As I write, my mind brings me back, and I can almost feel the cool air kissing my skin; this location will always hold a place in my heart.

On my way out of the garden, I heard some rustling; a glance to my right revealed a little squirrel scratching at the ground. I stooped down, watched the little creature hunting its dinner, and determined it was time to also find a little snack.

  • From Austin to Seattle, With Love!

    August 4th, 2017

As our country was prepping to celebrate another birthday, I decided to pack my bags and head to the Northwest to escape the Texas heat!  Goodbye Austin, hello Seattle!

I booked a room at Hotel FIVE in Belltown, Seattle; check-in was a breeze and the delightful hotel staff was more than happy to offer a quick overview of the area and some recommendations for food nearby.

Once I got up to the room, aside from the vibrant decor, I notice something very unexpected, it was this adorable little husky sitting on the bed.  His name is Dash and the little card on the bed encouraged me to take him along on my travels, tagging photos with #dashadvenutres. This was a bit of marketing genius!

The room was clean and quiet with a funky, yet somehow homey decor. The red accent wall behind the bed really made the room feel warm and inviting.

There was also a pineapple shaped box placed on the counter as a fun little upsell; an assortment of Munchies for your late night cravings.

  • Suburban Garden – Ready to Harvest

    July 21st, 2017

What a great way to start my morning!  I walked out, tea in hand, to check out my garden’s progress, only to be surprised by these delightful beauties!

    Tomatoes

What do we have here? Perfectly ripened tomatoes with a beautiful stalk! I already see a few new flowers forming; I will likely have another harvest in a few weeks.

    Green Peppers

Two green peppers just in time for fajita night! These guys are going to be so tasty; yum!

I love the color contrast of these Serrano peppers; the well-ripened ones are bright red, while the up-and-comers are still vibrant green.

    Cucumbers

The cucumbers are looking great; they’ve even begun to flower already. The leaves act as sun protection for the fruit, preventing it from burning with the intensity of the heat. Mother Nature has it pretty well figured out, I’d say.

    Basil

This Basil is completely out of control! I’d always heard it was difficult to keep alive, but this plant is huge! I’ve decided to make a massive batch of pesto and freeze some of it. The pesto will keep for a few months when frozen, thus allowing me to enjoy it throughout the summer.

Whether you know this or it’s something you’re hearing for the first time, planting mint will guarantee a cover crop of mint by the end of the season. Plainly stated, it will take over every bare spot of soil. I’ve enjoyed using copious amounts of mint in homemade lemonade, tabbouleh, and various other summer dishes.

    Kale

The Kale is coming along nicely; I’ll be watching these sprouts with anticipation over the next few months.

The stretchmarks on my tomatoes were a sign that I had overwatered them. Gardening in Texas is very different than the gardening I had done in Florida; I chalked this up to a learning curve.

Skylla didn’t care whether the tomatoes had “stretch marks”; she just wants to eat them! As a funny side note, about ten minutes after I took this photo, she ran from the back porch and did a Superman leap into my garden bed; luckily, she didn’t break any of the plants! It was like she had just realized food was in the wooden box. Silly little dog. ❤
